When you take a writing workshop with a critique I will ask you to find book comps, books that compete with yours. To find out what the educators and students like, I highly recommend reading the books on these state best book lists for children and teens.
In almost every state in the United States, teachers and librarians assemble a best books list each year for students to read. In many of these states, the students vote for their favorite book on the list.
To allow every child in the state to read and vote, classrooms and libraries order multiple copies of each title. It usually takes 2 years for a book to be added to a state list, so the books on these lists will probably be on the shelves in your local library for you to check out and read as possible book comps.
The books on these state lists have been chosen by educators and the winners have been selected by students. All of these books are highly recommended!
