The Baker’s Dozen

The Baker’s Dozen
by Heather Forest (Author) and Susan Gaber (Illustrator)

Booktalk: The baker Van Amsterdam becomes known far and wide in Colonial America for his St. Nicholas cookies but after he becomes prosperous, he also becomes stingy, and his luck changes…

Snippet: Van Amsterdam grew quite prosperous, and one night as he was busy counting his money, a thought occurred to him. “If I use just a little less butter, no one will know. If I use just one less egg, they will scarcely be able to tell. If I use just a little less honey, then there will be more money for me!”

Nasreddine
by Odile Weulersse (Author) and Rbecca Dautremer (Illustrator)

Booktalk: It’s time to go to market, so Nasreddine loads up the donkey and sets off with his father. But no matter what Nasreddine tries, it seems that someone always finds something to disapprove of. (Nasreddine is a legendary character popular in stories told throughout the Middle East.)

Snippet: One morning, Nasreddine was sitting on a carpet in the shade of a palm, drinking camel’s milk with cinnamon, when his father Mustafa called him: “Nasreddine, bring the donkey from the stables. We are going to the market.”

“As you wish, Father,” the young boy replied, putting on his hat and Turkish slippers.

Look Up!: Bird-Watching in Your Own Backyard

Look Up!: Bird-Watching in Your Own Backyard
by Annette LeBlanc Cate (Author, Illustrator)

Booktalk: You don’t have to own binoculars and know a bunch of fancy Latin names to watch birds! No matter where you live, they’re in your neighborhood — just look up.

Snippet: I wasn’t always a bird-watcher, but several years ago, I thought it would be nice to keep a nature sketchbook. When I sat outside to draw trees and rocks and flowers, I couldn’t help but begin to notice lots of birds, some that I knew and some that I didn’t, flitting around the edges of my drawings.
