Gridiron: Stories from 100 Years of the National Football League
by Fred Bowen (Author) and James E. Ransome (Illustrator)

Booktalk: The National Football League is the most popular sports league in the United States. Its championship game, the Super Bowl, is watched by millions of people every year. But it wasn’t always like this. In the last one hundred years, football has changed from a poorly organized, often overlooked sport to America’s favorite pastime. Discover the league’s scrappy beginnings in an automobile showroom, and early players like Red Grange, the Galloping Ghost. Relive the very first championship game, played indoors after a circus had visited, and famous games like the Ice Bowl. See the NFL at war, and meet some of the remarkable athletes who helped desegregate the league. Learn how the draft came into existence, and about the teams that strove for that almost impossible goal–a perfect season.

Silent Journey
by Carl Watson (Author) and Andrew Bosley (Illustrator)

Booktalk: Scott Schroeder dreams of a day when he and his father can have a home of their own. Following an accident that took his mother’s life eight years before, doctors discovered Scott was suddenly deaf. Blessed with being an accomplished gymnast and skilled at signing and reading lips, Scott’s biggest challenge is convincing others he is able to do all the same things as those in the hearing world. Picking up on conversations he observes along the way, Scott figures out a big family secret concerning his father and uncle and makes his mind up to play a part in their reconciliation.

Snippet: “The resemblance is uncanny,” she muttered and intensified her scrutiny.

Scott raised his eyebrows. I look like Dad, except for the color of my hair. What’s so unusual about that?

“Perhaps the sins of the father are forgiven as visualized in the son,” she added, glancing at Scott’s dad.

Scott thought he understood her words and scratched his head at the strange comment. What sins? What does she mean? It makes no sense.
