Forest Communities

Forest Communities
by The Whizpops (Author) and Glory Lawson (Illustrator)

Booktalk: Many forest communities in the West need fire to maintain a healthy ecosytem. Three forest types (ponderosa pine, lodgepole pine, and white-barked pine) benefit from the occasional wild fire. Natural history notes accompany the song lyrics and explain such topics as how trees survive fire, how soil exposed by fire provides an ideal place for seedlings to grow, and how fire releases seeds from resin-sealed pine cones.

Snippet:

Thick bark, big trunk
branches reaching high . . .

I must be standing with
the ponderosa pine!

The Fog

The Fog
by Kyo Maclear (Author) and Kenard Pak (Illustrator)

Booktalk: Warble is a small yellow warbler who lives on the beautiful island of Icyland, where he pursues his hobby of human watching. But on a warm day, a deep fog rolls in and obscures his view. The rest of the birds don’t seem to notice the fog or the other changes Warble observes on the island. The more the fog is ignored, the more it spreads.

Snippet: Far north, on a wild sea, was an island covered with ice.

People came from around the world to visit this special place.

Most of the birds living in the island paid little attention to these visitors. But there was one bird, a small yellow warbler, who did pay attention.

Warble was a devoted human watcher.
