Tuktuk: Tundra Tale

Tuktuk: Tundra Tale
by Robin Currie (Author) and Phyllis Saroff (Illustrator)

Booktalk: When one furry kamik (boot) slips off an Inuit driver’s sled, Tuktuk is in luck! But as he drags it home, Putak the polar bear, Aput the arctic fox, and Masak the caribou eye this little lemming’s prize and want it for their own. Can Tuktuk outwit the other animals and convince them that one furry kamik is no good for anyone bigger than a lemming?

Snippet: Tuktuk wanted that furry kamik. As the last rays of the setting Arctic sun glittered in his little lemming eyes, he said, “Putak, you are right. You need this furry kamik. I think you should put it on your . . . nose.”

“Really?” said Putak. He pressed his face into the kamik until it stuck.

Martin’s Dream Day

Martin’s Dream Day
by Kitty Kelley (Author) and Stanley Tretick (Photographer)

Booktalk: This day–August 28, 1963–was a momentous day in the Civil Rights Movement. It was the culmination of years spent leading marches, sit-ins, and boycotts across the South to bring attention to the plight of African Americans. Years spent demanding equality for all. Years spent dreaming of the day that black people would have the same rights as white people, and would be treated with the same dignity and respect. It was time for Martin to share his dream.
