Englishman J.J. Thomson discovers the first subatomic particle, the electron, using a gas-filled tube that creates a glowing beam.

2012-2015
The Large Hadron Collider accelerates protons to just below the speed of light and smashes them together. The collision creates a new kind of particle called the Higgs boson, which scientists believe is what gives mass to particles. After a period of being turned off and upgraded, the LHC is turned back on in 2015 and is more powerful than ever.
