{"id":251,"date":"2019-01-07T06:36:36","date_gmt":"2019-01-07T14:36:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/asuen.com\/nonfictionmonday\/?p=251"},"modified":"2019-02-03T15:38:15","modified_gmt":"2019-02-03T23:38:15","slug":"picture-books-nonfiction-fiction-or-both","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asuen.com\/nonfictionmonday\/picture-books-nonfiction-fiction-or-both\/","title":{"rendered":"Picture Books:  Nonfiction, Fiction or Both?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a little different approach to Nonfiction Monday, let&#8217;s take a look at some recent picture books that push the boundaries of traditional nonfiction.<\/p>\n<p>As you may already know, I recently was a round I judge for 2018 Cybils <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cybils.com\/2018\/10\/2018-nominations-elementary-middle-grade-nonfiction.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elementary\/Middle Grade Nonfiction<\/a>. It turned out a few of the nominated books were hard to categorize. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leeandlow.com\/books\/midnight-teacher\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">publisher&#8217;s website<\/a> says it is &#8220;based on a true story,&#8221; but calls it historical fiction in some of the press materials. My library had it shelved in nonfiction. Yet, if you read the author&#8217;s note in the back matter, you find out that this is a &#8220;fictionalized&#8221; account (no details given.) This is more problematic for me, because what is fact and what is fiction is unclear.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Carol Hinz had an excellent discussion of four picture books that blend fiction and nonfiction <a href=\"https:\/\/lernerbooks.blog\/2018\/12\/blending-nonfiction-and-fiction-4-recent-picture-books.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at Lerner Blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In these, the fictional elements are easier to spot. There&#8217;s also, however, a wonderful factual underpinning and the back matter is all hardcore nonfiction.
