\nBut that boy who raped me
\non the rocks by the creek
\ngot drunk and lay down
\non a dark night to play
\nchicken with the devil
\nand he lost.<\/p>\n

I begged my father
\nto take me to the funeral. I lied
\nand said that boy was my friend.<\/p>\n

He looked at me sharply,
\nmy ice-eyed father
\nmy gentle-hearted father, he heard
\nsomething in my voice
\nbut after one searing glance, he shut
\ndown the inquiry
\nwrote the note
\ngot me out
\nof school and walked with me
\nto the graveside on
\na gray September day cut by winter’s
\npromise in the wind.<\/p>\n

My father kept his arm
\naround my shoulders, while I cried
\nso hard I turned myself inside
\nout, so grateful IT was gone
\nand it was over.<\/p>\n

I did not know
\nthat the haunting
\nhad just begun.<\/p>\n
