At the age of six, she poured her pain onto a piece of paper late one night – and discovered the magic and impact of writing. <\/p>\n

\nON OUR OWN<\/strong><\/p>\n

No one warned me
\nthe world was fill of
\nordinary hazards
\nlike closets with locks and keys.<\/p>\n

I learned this lesson when Mom,
\nwithout her cousin to fall back on,
\nleft us daily with
\na succession of strangers
\nwhile she went to work.
\nOne woman was indisputably
\na demon in disguise,
\nfull lips grinning slyly
\nas Mom waved goodbye
\neach morning.
\n“See you after work,”
\nMom said on the first day.
\nThe second she was out of sight,
\nDemon’s smiles melted like
\nhot paraffin.
\nSnatching up Carol and me,
\nshe dragged us, kicking, to
\nthe bedroom closet.
\nShe shoved us in, quick as the witch
\nin “Hansel and Gretel”
\njamming the key in the lock.<\/p>\n
