Animal Legs
by Mary Holland (Author / Photographer)

Booktalk: Can you smell with your feet? Do you dig your claws into a river’s muddy bank to climb up and bask in the sun? Animals legs are different from humans in so many ways! Find out why strong talons suit a raptor, or webbing is perfect for water dwellers as author Mary Holland continues her photographic Animal Anatomy and Adaptations series by exploring the ways insects, amphibians, reptiles and mammals make their way in the world.

Caterpillars may look like they have lots of legs, but only the first three pairs are true legs. The others are called prolegs.

Brave Like Me

Brave Like Me
by Barbara Kerley (Author)

Booktalk: When someone is serving our country, far from home, everyone in their family has to be brave. Including — and sometimes especially — the kids. The words and photos of many active duty families capture the children’s worries, fears, trials, and triumphs while waiting for their parents to return from service.

Snippet: I miss Dad everyday.
But I know he’s doing his job, the best he can.
And I’m doing my job the best I can, too–
going to school, doing my homework,
and helping around the house, so that he will be
as proud of me as I am of him.
