2. Free mini-comic author visits
For some of my books, I’ve created printable mini-comics for readers. Some mini-comics answer author visit FAQs and others invite readers to write and/or draw their own mini-comic in a short DIY workshop.
Q. How do you fold a mini-comic?
A. Follow the directions in this video tutorial.
Click on the book title in the list below to see the booktalk for each book. If you don’t already have this book in your library, use the Hoopla, Overdrive, and WorldCat links to find a copy.
To find an e-book at your local library, click on the Hoopla or Overdrive links in each blog post. To see if the public library has a print copy, click on the WorldCat link. (WorldCat is an library catalog that lists 2 billion items in more than 10,000 libraries worldwide.)

3. How a Book is Made: 30-minute Virtual Visit (K-2)
- 30-minute virtual author visit on Zoom ($99 USD)
- GOAL: a “one-on-one” meeting in your classroom or library with the author of 400+ books for children, teens and adults

What does a book look like before it’s a book? It’s an idea on a piece of scratch paper, it’s a typed manuscript going off to an editor, it’s a computer image with art and words, it’s an F&G paper proof that falls apart when you read it, until one day…it’s a book that you can hold in your hand and share with a friend.
For this 30-minute virtual visit, I read four of my books about making things using screen share on Zoom so that everyone can see the words.
- Red Light, Green Light (fiction)
- Skate Trick: A Robot and Rico Story (fiction)
- Man on the Moon (nonfiction)
- Up! Up! Up! Skyscraper (nonfiction)
After the readings, I “show and tell” the stages of the bookmaking process, with manuscript drafts, rough pencil sketches, color sketches, a press sheet, black-and-white mechanicals, an F&G (folded and gathered) paper proof, and a finished book.
Our session ends with a question and answer session with questions written (by the teacher) in the Zoom chat so everyone can see them.
How a Book is Made virtual visits take place Tuesday-Thursday.

4. Fiction Ghostwriter: 45-minute Virtual Visit (Gr.2+)
- 45-minute virtual author visit with Google Meet ($149 USD)
- GOAL: a “one-on-one” meeting in your classroom or library with the author of 400+ books for children, teens and adults

In this 45-minute virtual visit for grade 2 and up, I read the first chapter of two middle-grade fiction books that I wrote as a ghostwriter using screen share on Google Meet so that everyone can see the words. This makes it work for both large and small groups, depending on your needs.
Almost half of my 400+ books were written as a ghostwriter. My name is NOT on the cover of these books. I signed an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) for most of these books, and can’t talk about them. (Shh!) For two of those ghostwriting projects, however, no NDA was involved.
For all of my books, ghostwritten or not, I use the 6 traits of writing:
- Ideas
- Organization
- Voice
- Word Choice
- Sentence Fluency
- Conventions (grammar, spelling, and punctuation)
I begin at the beginning of the list and move forward one step at a time. I ask the 6 Ws:
Who?
What?
When?
Where?
Why?
How? (The W is at the end!)
I use these 6 Ws to guide me as I research my books. (You can’t write about riding a skateboard if you don’t know the today’s moves! Things have changed from the days when I built my own skateboard in middle school.)
After I have my ideas written down, I need to organize them so the tension builds page by page. I’ll share organization methods that students can use for writing short or long stories.
After the readings, we have questions and answers with questions written (by the teacher) in the chat so everyone can see them. For virtual visits with a single classroom, you may wish to have students stand and ask their questions one at a time.

5. Nonfiction Secrets: 45-minute Virtual Visit (Gr.3+)
- 45-minute virtual author visit with Google Meet ($149 USD)
- GOAL: a “one-on-one” meeting in your classroom or library with the author of 400+ books for children, teens and adults to help students get a better grade on their next school report.

How do you organize your ideas when you write nonfiction? Where do you start? In Nonfiction Secrets, I talk about the creative process from a researcher’s point of view. Much of the writing done in school is in the form of reports, so this is a behind-the-scenes look at nonfiction writing.
For this 45-minute virtual visit, I read excerpts from eight of my nonfiction books using screen share on Google Meet so that everyone can see the words. This makes it work for both large and small groups, depending on your needs.
As I read the excerpts, I will talk with the students about six different ways to organize nonfiction writing:
- Chronological,
- Familiar to Unfamiliar,
- Simple to Complex,
- General to Specific,
- Compare and Contrast,
- and Problem to Solution.
The organizational pattern you use depends on the information you are trying to convey. Writing is about making decisions! Organizing their ideas in a clear manner will help students get a better grade on their next school report.
After the readings, we have questions and answers with questions written (by the teacher) in the chat so everyone can see them. For virtual visits with a single classroom, you may wish to have students stand and ask their questions one at a time.
