How a Book is Made Author Visit

What does a book look like before it’s a book? It’s an idea on a piece of scratch paper, it’s a typed manuscript going off to an editor, it’s a computer image with art and words, it’s an F&G paper proof that falls apart when you read it, until one day…it’s a book that you can hold in your hand and share with a friend.

For this 30-minute virtual visit, I read four of my books about making things using screen share on Zoom so that everyone can see the words.

  1. Red Light, Green Light (fiction)
  2. Skate Trick: A Robot and Rico Story (fiction)
  3. Man on the Moon (nonfiction)
  4. Up! Up! Up! Skyscraper (nonfiction)

After the readings, I “show and tell” the stages of the bookmaking process, with manuscript drafts, rough pencil sketches, color sketches, a press sheet, black-and-white mechanicals, an F&G (folded and gathered) paper proof, and a finished book.

Our session ends with a question and answer session with questions written (by the teacher) in the Zoom chat so everyone can see them.

In this 30-minute virtual author visit, K-2 students listen to 4 books read aloud and discover how fiction and nonfiction books are made.
