Just the Facts: Nonfiction Author Visit

How do you organize your ideas when you write nonfiction? Where do you start? In Just the Facts, I talk about the creative process from a researcher’s point of view. Much of the writing done in school is in the form of reports, so this is a behind-the-scenes look at nonfiction writing.

For this 30-minute virtual visit, I read excerpts from eight of my nonfiction books using screen share on Zoom so that everyone can see the words. This makes it work for both large and small groups, depending on your needs.

As I read the excerpts, I will talk with the students about six different ways to organize nonfiction writing:

Chronological,
Familiar to Unfamiliar,
Simple to Complex,
General to Specific,
Compare and Contrast,
and Problem to Solution.

The organizational pattern you use depends on the information you are trying to convey. Writing is about making decisions!

After the readings, we have questions and answers with questions written (by the teacher) in the Zoom chat so everyone can see them.

In this 30-minute virtual author visit, students discover how a nonfiction author writes and learn how to get a better grade on their next report. (Gr3+)

Schedule ONE 30-minute session (30 minutes total) $99 USD
Schedule TWO 30-minute sessions (75 minutes total*) $198 USD
Schedule THREE 30-minute sessions (2 hours total*): $297 USD
*including a 15-minute transition between sessions*

After you select a starting time, the app will ask you to select the program you are scheduling:

Weather happens! If your school or library closes due to the weather, simply click on the Reschedule button in your Zoom confirmation email and select a new time.

Payment Terms
By signing up, you agree to meet on the Zoom video conferencing platform for an author visit. If you need to cancel the author visit *before* the session begins, please be advised that I charge a $20 handling fee for cancellations. If you are unable to host your session at the time you selected, please click on the Reschedule button in the reminder email and set up another time. Thanks.
